December 7th

Jolene flipped onto her side on the bed, a well-thumbed Bible propped up in front of her. Oreo looked up from his place beside her before putting his head upon his paws. The cat had taken a liking to Jolene and was almost always by her side. Jolene was dressed in flannel pajama bottoms and a loose T-shirt. One of Jordan’s oversized ones, in fact. It looked way better on her but then everything looked amazing on her. Jordan was playing games on his cellphone. He would rather be playing a better game in the living room, on a console, but wanted to be with Jolene. Even video games couldn’t pull him from her side.

“Don’t you ever get tired of reading that?”

She put a finger to the page to hold her place. Her eyes, soft and loving, met his. “Never. There’s so much to learn. And it takes so long to get through it that I forget things and have to start all over again.”

“But isn’t most of it just stories and outdated laws?”

Jolene drew her delicate frame into a sitting position. The Bible, with her finger still in place, lay in her lap. “The Old Testament has plenty of stuff that’s outdated, sure. All those Leviticus rules that nasty people used to justify their bad behaviour, and there are some other questionable things. But there are still Old Testament books with fabulous life lessons. For me, though, The New Testament is where all the really important stuff is. The teachings of Jesus are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago.”

At their first encounter in the park, Jordan would have rolled his eyes and walked away when she started spouting religion. Now though, he was hooked. It was important to Jolene and therefore important to him. He put his phone down, sprawled across the bed beside her, and put his hand on her knee.

“Read to me.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I’m interested.” He grinned. “What does the Bible say about living in sin?”

“Actually, nothing specific. There’s a lot about sexual immorality though and a lot of people believe that sex before marriage falls into that category.” Obviously Jolene didn’t. She had moved into his bedroom last week. “What do you think?”

“I think God has bigger issues to deal with right now.”

That angelic smile turned up the corners of her lips, exposing her perfect teeth. Sunlight flooded the room through the open window and touched on lemony highlights in her blonde hair. She was so beautiful it took his breath away.

“I agree,” she said. “I might have argued to the contrary before but everything has changed.”

It sure had. In the past, Jordan would never have found common ground with Jolene, let alone be living with her. For some people, today was a nightmare. For him, it was a miracle. He knew harder times were on the way but right now his life was way better than it once was. He had a safe place to live and he had Jolene. She accepted him as he was, fucked up and scarred.
